Harmonic vs RV reducers: how to choose for a robot joint

Strain-wave and cycloidal reducers solve different joint problems. A practical guide to picking the right one by torque, stiffness, backlash and cost.

The short version

Harmonic (strain-wave) reducers give you very high ratio, near-zero backlash and a compact, lightweight package. They suit distal joints, wrists, elbows, fingers, where precision and mass matter more than raw torque.

RV (cycloidal) reducers carry far more torque and shock load and are much stiffer, at the cost of weight and size. They suit proximal joints, the base, shoulder and hip, that hold up the rest of the robot.

What to compare

Rated and peak torque against your duty cycle, not just the headline number. Backlash, in arcmin, against your control precision. Stiffness, which drives positioning accuracy under load. Allowable envelope (outer diameter and length) for your joint. And momentary overload rating for e-stop and collision survival.

On cost, RV units are heavier and pricier per joint but absorb more abuse; harmonic units are lighter and tighter but more sensitive to overload. Always size against the clamped, reducer-limited torque, not the motor-side number.

Sourcing notes

Harmonic is dominated globally by Japan, with strong domestic-replacement options from China at 30 to 50 percent lower cost. RV is similar. The cost and lead-time gap is real, but so is the variance in batch consistency, which is exactly what supplier vetting and inspection are for.
